Isleworth Masonic Lodge

No. 5193

We are a friendly lodge have many events and functions throughout the year which are enjoyed by wives, partners and close family friends. These have included attending the Irish night at Kempton Racecourse, an annual BBQ event which raises money for local charities, curry nights and several historic hostelry visits!

Working within the masonic framework, we endeavor to support the charitable festivals which raise money for masonic and non-masonic charities in Middlesex.

“Isn’t it strange that princes and kings, and clowns that caper in sawdust rings,and common people, like you and me, are builders for eternity? Each is given a bag of tools,

A shapeless mass,

A book of rules;

and each must make-

Ere life is flown-

A stumbling block Or a stepping stone.”

R.L Sharpe, A Bag of Tools, circa 1809

About Isleworth Lodge

To live respected and die regretted.

In 1930 Isleworth was not represented in the Province of Middlesex. The name was selected to rectify this by the Founders from the Isleworth area, for its Lodge to be sponsored by Hamilton Lodge No 3309. It was the first Founder Lodge of Twickenham District Masonic Centre when W Bro Wyndham Edwards was also first Chairman.

The Isleworth Lodge was mooted at the Hamilton Lodge of Instruction which had then as The Preceptor, W.Bro. Ernest Chapman a Past Master of Hamilton Lodge. Consequently the formation of an Isleworth Lodge was sponsored by the Hamilton Lodge No.3309.

Amongst the most active members in the formation were Bro. Wyndham Edwards, W.Bro. Herbert Trewinnard, Bro. William J. Tucker and Bro. Edward Stafford who acted as host when preliminary meetings were held at his home. The prayer put to Grand Lodge and Provincial Grand Lodge was that while surrounding districts were well represented in the Province, Isleworth had no such representations, although it was steeped in antiquity and history and mentioned in the Doomsday Book.

There were many Royal associations with the area, and in fact, Syon House nearby was frequently used by the Court from early Tudor Times, and the residence of many noble and famous personages, possibly the most historical resident being Lady Jane Gray. Furthermore, Isleworth was a fast growing town in population and had a large potential of candidates.

The badge was the subject of considerable discussion and shows the Old Isleworth Church, hard by the Isleworth Ferry, and the Royal Barge which conveyed the ill-fated Lady Jane Grey to imprisonment and subsequent execution in the Tower of London, taken from a contemporary print of that time. The heron is a reminder of the large heronry, which until recent times occupied the Isleworth Ait.
